Badgers have shaped the Welsh landscape for thousands of years, living quietly in our woodlands, fields, hedgerows, and now our urban spaces as they adapt to changing habitats.
They’re a vital part of our rich wildlife heritage and deeply rooted in Welsh folklore.
But today, badgers face real and growing threats.
That’s why we’re launching this new campaign, CYMRU - Badgers Belong Here, to educate, inform, and protect, and we need your voice to help us do it.

Why badgers
matter to Wales

Badgers (moch daear) are part of our natural, cultural, and linguistic heritage.
In Welsh, they're known as mochyn daear (earth pig) or broch, names that echo through our poetry, place names, and traditions. They are:

Symbols of wisdom and resilience in Welsh folklore.

Ecosystem engineers: helping to aerate soil, disperse seeds, and shape habitats.

Part of the living history of our countryside.
Let’s honour their place in our past and protect their place in our future.
Threats facing Welsh badgers

Despite strong legal protections, badgers are under threat from:
Illegal persecution (baiting, poisoning, and sett disturbance)
Erledigaeth anghyfreithlon
Persecution is a crime, not a countryside tradition.

There is a disproportionately high number of badger baiting crimes reported in Wales.

94% bTB transmission is cattle-cattle. Gwartheg yw trosglwyddiad bTB o 94%
The effectiveness of cattle-based measures is evident today. We only need to look at Wales, which successfully manages bTB without culling badgers. By paying greater epidemiological attention to cattle, the Welsh bTB strategy is amongst the most progressive and effective bTB control programmes in Great Britain to date.

The threat of badger culling coming to Wales

The Senedd elections are approaching in May 2026, and leadership or policy changes could threaten badgers, weakening their protections and increasing the threat of badger culling.
Mae etholiadau’r Senedd yn agosáu ym mis Mai 2026, a gallai arweinyddiaeth neu newidiadau polisi fygwth moch daear, gan wanhau eu hamddiffyniadau a chynyddu’r bygythiad o ddifa moch daear.

Wales is showing that wildlife and farming can coexist. The Welsh approach to tackling bovine TB (bTB) proves that science, not scapegoating, is the way forward.
Unlike England, Wales does not cull badgers.
Mae Cymru yn dangos y gall bywyd gwyllt a ffermio gydfodoli. Mae dull Cymru o fynd i’r afael â TB mewn gwartheg (bTB) yn profi mai gwyddoniaeth, nid bwch dihangol, yw’r ffordd ymlaen. Yn wahanol i Loegr, nid yw Cymru yn difa moch daear.
The bovine TB strategy in Wales is amongst the most progressive and effective bTB control programmes employed in Great Britain. The policy in Wales follows the science and applies stricter controls to cattle, such as through better testing:

Stricter biosecurity measures

Country-wide annual testing

Using more accurate tests (SICCT at severe interpretation, IDEXX & Gamma Interferon)
Compared to England, which to date, still uses the standard SICCT test (at the lowest interpretation) most widely. But at only 50% accurate, it can miss up to half of the bTB-infected cattle! meaning one in two to one in five (50% - 20%) infected animals could be missed each time a herd is tested.
This strategy is working. Let’s keep it that way. Mae'r strategaeth hon yn gweithio. Gadewch i ni ei gadw felly.
