A General Election has been called and Badger Trust, alongside our friends at Wild Justice, continues to work to ensure badger culling is not extended by stealth in the election period.
The supplementary badger cull starts on 1 June 2024, and the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs consultation on extending badger culling for an indefinite period ended just before the election was announced.
We have sent a letter from our solicitor Leigh Day to the Permanent Secretary at Defra to confirm that no new or additional licences will be added in the coming period, i.e. it will be up to the next Minister to make these decisions, taking into account all the issues we and others have raised during the consultation.
In our continued policy of openness, we share the letter we have sent below.
When we get a reply we will publish here*.
We continue to reserve the right to take legal action when Defra reports back on the consultation.
Peter Hambly, Executive Director of Badger Trust said,
“It’s time to stop killing thousands of badgers and end the horrific badger cull.”
