In memory of Brian Rhodes from Wirral & Cheshire Badger Group

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Brian “Bri” Rhodes, a much-loved, hugely respected founder member of the Wirral & Cheshire Badger Group, whose commitment to badger protection spanned more than four decades.

Bri was instrumental in the formation of the group in 1979/80, at a time when badger persecution was widespread across the county. For the next 45 years he worked tirelessly for the protection of badgers, contributing to sett monitoring and protection, rehabilitation, public advice, fundraising, and court proceedings as an expert witness.

His knowledge, experience and dedication were widely respected within the badger and wider wildlife conservation community.

Many will remember Bri for organising and leading the group’s renowned badger watching evenings over many years. These events helped inspire countless people and were recognised beyond the group, including commissioned watches for the People’s Trust for Endangered Species and a feature on BBC Northwest Tonight.

Bri also supported conservation through his involvement with other wildlife projects, including funding barn owl boxes and helping secure the leasehold for Crossley Woodland, a place that held special meaning for him. He was a devoted family man and a familiar figure in the field, often accompanied by his much-loved black Labrador, Merf.

"Our badger groups are only as strong as the people behind them. It is their passion and commitment that makes all the difference; protecting badgers, inspiring and educating communities, and ensuring these animals thrive in every corner of the country." Sally Jones, Groups Manager

Brian Rhodes made a significant and lasting contribution to badger conservation in Wirral and Cheshire. His legacy lives on through the continued work of the Wirral & Cheshire Badger Group, which remains committed to being there for badgers and always welcomes new members who wish to learn, meet like-minded people and make a real difference for badgers locally.

We thank Bri for his extraordinary service and dedication.
