October brings us National Badger Day on Sunday, 6th of October, and we join our friends, Scottish Badgers, in designating the whole month #Brocktober. This year we celebrate the crucial role badgers play in nature.

‘Nature is my happy place’

Our 2024 theme, 'Nature is my happy place,' celebrates the benefits of badgers and how they help create landscapes that bring joy to humans and animals alike.

Did you know that badgers play a pivotal role in maintaining our environment's natural beauty and balance? These fascinating creatures help maintain healthy insect populations, disperse seeds, and aerate the soil through their digging activities.

Let’s protect badgers and their habitats this Brocktober

Alert Badger in woodland with autumnal leaves on the ground. Tt's Brocktober! Nature is my happy place.

By protecting badgers and their habitats, we ensure that our natural landscapes remain diverse and vibrant, making nature a happy place for humans and wildlife.

By joining in with Brocktober, you will learn how you and your clan can keep nature a happy place for us and our badger friends whilst celebrating their beauty and wonder and all that wildlife and nature bring to us.

We have lots of fun content planned for you this month, including a Q&A with our Research Manager, Dr Hannah, updates on the work you support, games, votes, activities and, of course, LOTS of badger facts, photos and videos.

Seven top tips to keep nature a happy place for us and for badgers

  1. Help protect your local green spaces so badgers and other wildlife can thrive in their natural habitats.

  2. Learn how to live with badger visitors and leave space for them to forage.

  3. Sign up for the next stage of our first citizen science project, State of the Badger, to help us understand the population health of badgers and safeguard their future.

  4. Try our responsible badger-watching tips to get to know – and love! – your local badgers.

  5. Use our free planning and development guides to help protect badgers and their homes from harm and avoid long-term problems.

  6. Report badger road traffic casualties to identify accident hotspots and save badgers.

  7. Make a difference to badgers near you — get involved with your local badger group.

Why is National Badger Day held during the Badger Cull?

National Badger Day on 6th October began long before the badger cull of the past decade. Sadly, we are all too aware that this time of celebration falls during the intensive badger culling period in England as the seemingly endless badger cull continues.

But we won’t let the Government’s senseless slaughter deter us from recognising the beauty and wonder of this amazing native species.

National Badger Day and Brocktober are brilliant opportunities to share our love for badgers and show how we can protect badgers and their habitats.

You can help by spreading the word about the beauty and wonder of badgers, our campaigns to protect them, the threats they face, and what we can ALL do to help them.
